Monster Hunter: World capture checklist: why the trap was not enough
For a capturable monster, low health, a trap and tranquilizer status must overlap. A trap by itself does not complete a capture. Start by checking the target: Elder Dragons cannot be captured, so no amount of extra tranquilizer fixes that attempt.

Check eligibility before packing for the hunt
Confirm the target and quest objective first. Elder Dragons are immune to traps and cannot be captured. A capture plan for an ordinary eligible monster must not become a rule that you apply to every large target.
Prepare the trap and tranquilizers together. Having only one part creates an avoidable problem late in the hunt. If the supply box offers suitable EZ supplies, consider those before spending your own stock.
Use low-health evidence rather than elapsed fight time
Limping is a useful cue. With sufficient tracking, skull indicators on the monster icon also help identify the capture opportunity. Do not replace these observations with an assumption that a fight of a certain length must have caused enough damage.
Avoid uncontrolled extra attacks while teammates prepare the capture. The group's immediate task has changed from dealing damage as fast as possible to satisfying the capture conditions without killing the target.
Make all three conditions overlap
Use an appropriate shock or pitfall trap and apply tranquilizer status. In the ordinary capture sequence, two Tranq Bombs are sufficient when they connect appropriately. The monster also has to be weak enough while the other conditions hold.
For example, a monster enters a trap and receives tranquilizers but is not captured. Check its remaining health and eligibility before throwing away every remaining consumable. You can apply tranquilizers before the trap; what matters is the conditions overlapping, not one mandatory button order.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| The Elder Dragon ignores my trap | It cannot be captured. Change the plan rather than repeating the same trap attempt. |
| The monster is trapped but the hunt has not ended | A trap is only one condition. Check low health and tranquilizer status. |
| I do not see a skull icon | Check tracking information and other cues; do not assume every tracking state reveals the same detail. |
| The group killed the target during setup | Agree on the capture attempt and reduce uncontrolled damage once the target is ready. |
Quick answers
Must tranquilizers always come after the trap?
No. Pre-tranquilizing can work. Eligibility, low health, trap and tranquilizer status must line up.
Can I capture every large monster?
No. Elder Dragons are a clear exception; check the target and quest before planning a capture.
