Project Zomboid bandages: stop bleeding before changing the dressing
A dirty bandage is not the same thing as an uncovered bleeding wound. Before removing a dressing, check the Health panel and prepare its replacement. Changing it while exposed can turn a manageable task into an interrupted treatment.

Make room to read the Health panel
Get away from immediate pursuit before opening a sequence of inventory and treatment actions. Inspect the affected body parts instead of treating the first visible dressing as the whole problem.
Bandages primarily stop bleeding. Check whether the wound is covered and whether bleeding remains elsewhere. A successful action on one body part does not establish that every injury has been addressed.
Prepare the next dressing before removing the current one
A dirty bandage can still be stopping bleeding. Removing the dressing from an unhealed wound can expose it again. Check that a replacement is actually available and reachable before starting the change.
For example, you notice a dirty dressing while searching a building. Instead of immediately removing it and then searching containers for another, identify a safer position and a usable replacement first. Complete the change as one planned task, then recheck the panel.
Use instructions for your build and injury
The wiki distinguishes bandage preparation and game builds. Check your own recipe list for the available cleaning or sterilizing method. Do not copy a precise ingredient count from a guide for a different build.
Carry a small reserve appropriate to the trip instead of relying on finding a replacement at the moment of removal. This is a dressing-management guide: stopping bleeding does not prove that every other injury consequence is resolved, and it is not a diagnosis or cure for Knox Infection.
When your plan breaks
| What happens | What to change |
|---|---|
| A dressing is dirty but the wound is not visibly uncovered | Read the Health panel; dirty does not automatically mean the bandage has stopped controlling bleeding. |
| Bleeding returns when I remove the bandage | Check whether the wound is still unhealed and have the replacement ready before removal. |
| Treatment of one body part did not solve the whole situation | Inspect the other listed injuries rather than repeating the same action blindly. |
| The recipe in a guide is unavailable | Check the game build and your recipe interface before assuming the ingredient list applies. |
Quick answers
Should I remove a dirty bandage immediately wherever I am?
Assess your position, the wound and replacement supplies first. An exposed, interrupted change can create another problem.
Does applying a bandage settle every injury risk?
No. Its bleeding-control role is narrower than the game's full injury and infection systems.
Sources & version notes
Bandage functions and dirty-dressing behavior were checked against PZwiki. Its page contains build-specific information, so this guide avoids treating a beta revision or recipe as the universal current release. The building-search scenario is an original example.
