Warframe mod capacity: why an empty slot still rejects a mod

An empty mod slot is not spare capacity. The total drain of the installed mods must fit the item’s capacity budget, and upgrading a mod can raise that drain. Read the numbers and polarity symbols before assuming the interface is broken.

Reviewed 2026-10-15 · Ordinary mod drain and polarity; special slots and equipment can alter capacity

Check compatibility before checking cost

First confirm that the mod can be installed on the selected kind of equipment. The mod’s item category matters. A compatible card still has to fit the remaining capacity budget.

Use the Upgrade screen’s current numbers, not only the number of open rectangles. When several slots remain but capacity is exhausted, the next decision is which costs to change, not where to drag the next card.

Work through a capacity example

Suppose an ordinary setup has 20 capacity and three candidate mods with drain costs of 9, 9 and 6. These are illustrative numbers, not a recommended named build. Together they cost 24, so the empty third slot does not make the setup legal.

Digital Extremes’ mod guide describes matching polarity as halving ordinary drain, rounded up. If one of the 9-drain mods fits a matching slot, its cost becomes 5. The total is now 5 + 9 + 6 = 20. Check the green cost shown by the interface to confirm the actual result for your equipment.

Recalculate before applying Fusion

Fusion raises a mod’s effectiveness and its drain. A card that fits now can stop fitting a particular configuration after it is upgraded.

Before spending resources, inspect the new rank’s drain and compare it with the configurations you use. Prioritize upgrades that serve the equipment’s purpose. Raising every available card evenly can leave a collection of stronger cards without a coherent setup that can hold them together.

Use permanent changes after the plan is clear

Forma can change or add slot polarities. Capacity upgrades and special slot types offer other ways to change a setup’s budget. Review the relevant Actions prompt before committing a resource.

Plan which mod belongs in each slot first. A polarity chosen for one copied build can be inconvenient for another configuration. For mismatched slots and special equipment, use the drain and total shown in your game. Do not force a copied build into a capacity budget that your own interface does not show.

Quick answers

Can I fill every slot as soon as it is available?

Only if the mods are compatible and their total drain fits the available capacity.

Should I use Forma before deciding on the mods?

Plan the intended slot costs first. Review what the polarity change does to your other configurations before spending the resource.

Capacity, Fusion and matching-polarity rules were checked against Digital Extremes’ documentation. The 20-capacity calculation is an original example. This is not a damage benchmark, a current-meta build or a claim that every special equipment rule was tested.
