About Move Lab & how the planner works

Move Lab is an independent Block Blast strategy resource operated by Alvin Yang. It combines a board planner with original examples so players can inspect a move instead of trusting an unexplained answer.

What the planner checks

It tests legal positions and piece orders for your three visible, fixed-orientation pieces on an 8×8 board. After each placement, it clears every complete row and column at the same time. Recommendations first prioritize the number of pieces placed, then a heuristic for cleared lines, open 3×3 spaces, empty cells and isolated holes.

Search runs in a browser worker with a limit of 180,000 visited states or approximately 1.8 seconds. A limited search can show a useful legal sequence, but cannot prove that a better sequence does not exist. Even an exhausted search optimizes this heuristic for the current tray, not future random pieces or the official game score.

Content and verification

The three practice boards are original examples, not real numbered levels. Their published solutions are replayed by a separate cell-array implementation in the test suite. This verifies the supported rule model; it does not establish independent play of every current game mode or app version.
